Labasheeda and Thought forms

Thurs 18th Feb - The Victoria, Swindon

Small patterns drawn in the dirt... frostings of flute... a whirling of Eastern flavours in dry ice blue... guitar thrown spirals, peppered in light drum fall... Phantoms growing, growling then hitching up all doom ridden n heavy, the riffs crawling round like talons coaxing prey...

...shifting swifty to lighter melodies, and painted tomorrows. Dictaphone on the pick-ups, like half erased memories, both guitars building in intensity then relishing the violent release. Guy's pneumatic hammers carving up a stampede of a finale ... leaving him hunched over his kit, completely knackered as Charlie n Deej conjured the embers of the night into a spinning collapse...

You can draw comparisons from everywhere to describe the magic these three create, that mix of joyful fury and intoxicating grace rides out on so many influences, but that Thought Forms chemistry remains utterly unique...

The Dutch Labasheeda were headlining, Joe was loving that souped up Bettie Serveert parallel... for me, it took a few songs in to completely dig the vibe, but by the time the violin was cutting the action into tasty echoes I was really hooked... crouched in the corner scribbling along... my biro dancing to that aggressive riffery they continued to ply. A welcome change from the cover version norm of this town

Vertical Slum , Thought Forms and Mugstar

4th Feb - Louisiana, Bristol

Vertical Slum were like a psyched Oasis, bass and drums sucking at the air... half burying the lead's ballsy delivery... the threesome threw out loads of energy... hints of 60's excess in the sway...

Thought forms followed, screaming out an epic vibe, a clash of gnarly guitars beneath turbulent skies… drums insanely churning it up and throwing it straight through your skull in majestic spans... Purring abstractions shimmering between tracks like sly eyed serpents beckoning you in with a gauzed cross haze, the riffs around it building on scorched hues … Taut chimes origami(ed) outward ... growing intense, then exploding...

Mugstar did a great job in following them. A super saturated assault on the senses with a visual back wash of swirling b/w fragments and TV statics, incredible stuff akin to Oneida's insistent ruttings. Plying an infectious kraut vibe, but with the breathing spaces removed... machine gun drums peppering your body whilst you struggled for an endlessly retracting horizon... vocal yells sucked in... guitars dicing them up into mirrored wounds... spacey effects aerosoling the serrated innards. Those secondary and tertiary layers bending out of shape in the sunburnt growl, the eyes of Jesus fading inside out behind them... I'll definitely be checking these boys out again...
