Rhodri Davies, Mark Durgan, Stuart Chalmers and Dsic

Cafe Kino - Thursday 21st March 2013

Dsic was plying this lush clash of prickly textures as we got down into the cellar of the Kino... Already mid flow creating a satisfying scramble of rhythm blocks squibbing an '80s pinball death race of collision... half heard radio chewed up and spit roasted on mouth mic(ed) feedback. Curved over the Mac Book a diluted wash of Quink highlighting his face, locked in total concentration as nibble fingers released an abstract goo of lush corrupted peaks and howling cyber hooligans. New shapes incubated in centrifuges of rough disco, an acrid centipedal giggling of cubic, sawing triangles and other geometric javelins... foreign voices... Lantern-like perceptions, broken down in a rash of machine language, plenty of mysterious ciphers that will burn for centuries to come...

Stu and Durgan's set was steeped in sci-fi flora and squeaky fits n spurts.... Trance-like butters of phonic blur. A conversation that seemed to slur around in an alcoholic stupor full of percussive jellyfish and avant ping-pong. Gorgeous radio injection and cassette fodder traversing a glitchy simmer of tactile modulation, diving into hypnotic gashes of rhythm. The final curtain to some mighty hemispheric play... These two have just got to make an album together!

Never heard of Rhodri Davies before... and wasn't prepared for the blizzard of wow that ensued... That souped up amplified roar coming from the tiniest of harps producing a glare, all mantra stitched, that shook you from the very foundations. A barbed brutality that totally satisfied, sounded like a JCB scraping out of Tom Waits' throat... apathy annihilation in distorted dulcimer like twang that seemed to be buried in shaking fists... I'm surprised Davies didn't break more strings, the man was siphoning some truly demonic energies...

Acrid Lactations - Aura Mirror Come Fickle, Anachronous Law and Manner C44

This latest cassette from Susan Fitzpatrick & Stuart Arnot is full of lovingly observed madness…an improvised scramble of junkyard rummages and asylum throat falls, abridged by dronal sax and squeeze box wheeze…

The ‘Aura Mirror Come Fickle’ side starts all methanol fatigue squelched.... The saxophone’s cacophonic limbs fingering your head in sliding horizons of drone, bleeding over to some disturbed throat action. A bizarre Schwitters like dance of pip spitting, vowel fights, and folksy shadowing. Lip tourettes thrown into some lovely reverby springs as the murky scene is illuminated in the sulphurous strike of match heads…

The flip ‘Anachronous Law and Manner’ opts for squeeze box and whistling exhales, backward snoring and a bewildering variety of betweens. Sipping hot tea to witchy murmuring … metallic clanks of cutlery and teaspoon chink … hub cap / cymbal showers of tipping beads mixing with some freeform jazz angles… This baby has a lot of weird energy oozing out of it, and is well worth wrapping your ears round…nice Luchador(ed) bear on the cover too…

Hypernature - Germseed

Totally loving this recent release from Alice Kemp's Germseed. A rich, muscular offering in corrosive currents of over wrought hex-eating sibilance. A tar black and growly dose of bass with warm injections of mournful vocal doppelganging the rub, trancing forks sucking you deeper into the daggering dune grass...

Starts in drum hits and revving slurs, nano shunted into a pool of digital lice. Fragmented chords of sparse guitar sprouting the reflective slow-mo's, curving the brewing electronics and jazz-handed zimmer. A fairly gentle album introduction which sons of bitches vanquishes in amp buzzing halos of evil bass. A dirty bath of rasping wings intersected by a wailing 'not sure if it's even human' vox, mirroring the guitar's contours in semi-opaque suggestion. A really satisfying vibe that leads to the doomically flayed flowers teeth fingers ink. A slow texturised gristle of birched and wasp stung bass, anointed in ritualised gasps that ooze through it all like some delicious half buried invocation.

This intense simplicity bleeds into the strummed chordic beauty of fistful of ashes . A pounding numbness, with spikes of unicorn horned vocals seemingly sucked through bared teeth and grates of tubular respiration. Powerful ju ju indeed clocking in at a satisfying 9 mins plus...

For the penultimate track bone reader, things get more dronal, protracted. Gnarled corridors puckered in tasty fret scraped periodics, a bristling back that's soothed in a melodic underbelly of spidersilked synth.

The last track be ye ready also ends this excursion in hungry distortion, as shredded cries tear from inside the reverberation with a restrained intoxicating violence. Window rattling frequencies ending in a liminal hymn of shifting embers. This baby certainly burns bright with an unholy visceral beauty that's begging to be heard.
