27th March @ Power Lunches Hackney, London
Think more cafes should follow Power Lunches lead by opening up their basements to fresh musical talent and sprinkling their recorded wares amongst the tea and coffee aromas upstairs... Nice vibe indeed, with the minus figure weather shaken off further by the mellow vibes infecting most of that night's proceedings...
A soothing tapestry of looped debris from Jimmy Billingham's Tidal project started things off.... Layer upon layer of texture jostling with the next, rewritten in sky-stretched transition, attentive hands adjusting the illusions; blending the ingredients. Trance inducing stuff, made more so by the addition of drifting harmonica and clanking harbour bells. A subtle shift of ivory markers undulated in a darkened kinesis. Serious medications that were brought to an abrupt end...
Casio drone provided the foundations for Scott's set... Stereocilia was a mind treat of guitar filaments, e-bowery and short-lived machine beats. A slowly evolving beast, developing into a swaying python of tipping texture.. Snagging you up in plenty of hypno hooks eaten in Mali-esque fret circles and inked over by somersaulting effects. The gently changing projections a perfect mirror to the lobe curling multiples weaselling your ear... a resurrection of underlying chords brought through it all for a finale of fading memories. A tasty hint of what to expect from the up and coming album...
Now Plurals rounded off the evening in a glorious soup of stabbing statics and malfunction... total drone monsters leaping out of their usual semi-ambient suits for a bit of noisy riot making. Five individuals intent on decorating the gates of Hades with double tape chews, screaming clarinet and 70's keyboard canker, desiccated by a suitcase of effects pedals and a bewildering mass of other stage hidden toys. A howling brew that gave me a much missed 'Sunburned' improv fix in clawing corrosion.
